Relating physical properties to temperature-induced damage in carbonate rocks

چکیده
Carbonate rocks have a widespread diffusion in the Earth crust and are extensively used cultural heritage buildings. These can be naturally or anthropically exposed to high temperatures. Consequently, relating physical properties temperature-induced damage is extremely important. Six sets of compositionally texturally different carbonate rocks, spanning from limestones marbles dolomitic marbles, were analysed this study. Different properties, such as porosity, seismic wave velocities electrical resistivity, measured before after thermal treatments with heating/cooling ranges between 105 600°C. Microstructural observations optical analyses investigate how affects microstructures. This integrated approach allowed define generalised relationship thermal-induced damage, by way an induced index valid for broad suite rocks.

Evaluation of the excavation-induced ground movements is an important design aspect of supporting system in urban areas. This evaluation process is more critical to the old buildings or sensitive structures which exist in the excavation-affected zone. Frame distortion and crack generation are predictor, of building damage resulted from excavation-induced ground movements, which pose challenges ...
متن کاملCharacterization of Bitumen Bearing Carbonate Rocks
Several countries, including Canada, contain sizeable bitumen resources in highly fractured carbonate rocks. Any possible recovery of bitumen from these reservoirs will be highly dependent on proper understanding of the rock and fluid properties and how they vary in the reservoir. These carbonates are extremely heterogeneous, and as a result proper reservoir characterization is challenging. In ...
متن کاملRigorous connection between physical properties of porous rocks
Rigorous cross-property bounds that connect the effective thermal conductivity k. (or the electrical conductivity a.) and the effective bulk modulus K. of any isotropic, two-phase composite were recently derived by the authors. Here we reformulate these bounds and apply them to porous rocks with dry or fluid-filled pores. It is shown that knowledge of the effective conductivity can yield sharp ...
